VITAL IS ASLEEP

The vital (navel/core region of the body - Hara - Dantian) is not a conscious dimension. Vital beings are not conscious beings essentially. The dimension of consciousness is in them but the faculties through which it operates are lunar, subconscious, unconscious, fundamentally. To become human is more than keeping your spine straight like a yogi although it does also involve that standing up, that extension of the spine. It involves becoming conscious in these specific ways that we have the capacity for.

In order to do that then, you must pass through consciousness of the limitations existence in the world of this kind represents so the threat of mortality seems to be there. It seems to be implied in the possibility of consciousness itself but as soon as the enjoyment of the truly conscious state is enjoyed, we also pass into the intuitive realization of an entirely different kind of dimension that has nothing in itself exclusively to do with appearing in a world in a form of some sort with various ten or twelve faculties or whatever they are and how many they are.

After having passed through the obligation that this consciousness represents and assuming then in practice a mortal existence fundamentally, there is the intuitive realization of that which you truly are, that which the world truly is, and it is not mortal. It is not anything. It is that absolute conscious light which is taking on all of these forms and which we fundamentally represent without that form itself being the principle end of our existence.

So it is a threatening and a very daring thing to do to become human. Human is a sort of middle term between what is really manifest and solid and moving and what is absolute and transcended and perfect and you must go through that middle term and that is a very daring thing to do but we are built to do it. We are full of the impulse to do it and in fact, apart from the impulse to do it, we don't have any other choice not to do that.

The choice to do anything other than that involves suffering and involves a kind of suffering that we will not permit, that we will not endure, that we instantly try to transcend, undo, pass beyond. It is just that in general human beings try to pass beyond that suffering through artifices that are not truth in the form of obsessions, consolations, pleasures, using the media, the vital itself most generally or the media of some other kind of process of energy above the vital and even above the human which we pinpoint exclusively and call God or truth or heaven or whatever it is.

In some way or other though, through the artifices of the usual search, we bypass the obligation of the human and do not make it the medium of our realization but instead go for consolations above and below it so the search as it has been generated among men is not one that has made them human and after thousands of years of the appearance of all kinds of spiritual and religious, practical designs among men, we have not seen the appearance of human beings.

We still have the daily news and that is still the central content of our lives. It's the same old shit that's been in the news for centuries and so an entirely other principle then has been communicated through the media of the search and the usual round of human life so-called must be realized and that is the function of the dharma to communicate that possibility and the function of sadhana to implement it.
