The Story of 'Unknown Jerome'

"A man does not buy a cookie because he is hungry; a man buys a cookie because he is suffering and needs a small moment of happiness.

"A woman does not buy a cookie becasue she likes sweets; a woman buys a cookie because she is lonely and needs love.

"Children do not buy cookies becasue they are suffering or because they are lonely; children buy cookies because they are hungry and like sweets.

"Only happiness and love and sweetness can satisfy a man, a woman, and a child."

Subject: question on unknown jerome cookies

Hi - I searched the web for anything on Unknown Jerome cookies, and found your website at the top of the list. As a certified chocoholic and experienced cookie taster I concur with your rating of the cookie as extremely memorable. Here are a few of my memories of that particular cookie! (And FYI - the second website that talked about Unknown Jerome had one of the old glass jars for sale...)

I used to buy my UJ cookies all over Marin while commuting to various places, and the famous glass jars were my friends, especially if they contained fresh cookies.

I even remember the poem (more or less) for the Snart Foob, though I didn't care too much for that cookie... (in reflection, the powdered nose cookie had to be a visual pun on the many coked-up noses in Marin at the time...)

Snart Foob, O Snart Foob!
Hamen glub globcek
Acht brnov crzoeckel
O Snart Foob!

....or something like that... (it bothers a few of my friends that I have remembered this bit of prose... but what the heck? It was fun!)

In later years the Unknown Jerome franchise was reduced to one Asian family from Hayward who baked cookies in a small storefront in Larkspur Landing. Like many of the stores at that shopping center - it is long gone. But not before I gave them a lot of business.

I really miss the cookies, as the semi-sweet chocolate chips and the pecan pieces made for an excellent cookie. I really liked them when they were warm from the oven, and would take some over to the theater and really enjoy myself. I have tried to make my own Unknown Jerome cookies, but I'm missing by a country mile, as I must not be close in my list of ingredients and baking process. I'm hoping that someday I will find the recipe and/or someone will open up another Unknown Jerome bakery...

So that is my contribution to world peace - and if my karma is in the right place I will once again be reunited with one of my all-time favorite cookies. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Have a great day, and I look forward to hearing more about Unknown

Jerome Cookies!
