Various excerpts from the
teachings of Adi Da Samraj
When those who have lost FAITH in the exalted begin to suspect that things are not as they seem, they always assume that things must be worse than they seem, not better.1 Westerners are always trying to surmount the negative psychological force, either through ego-effort or by means of imaginary association with a separate Absolute Other, Whose power they can consume irresponsiblyand, in all of that, FAITH and belief are reduced to the status of methods for overcoming psychological negativity.2 FAITH is the assumption of the Divine as the active Principle and Condition of your life rather than the little twenty watts, the field of ego in which you enclose yourself day to day.3 How do you get to trust it? Seriously consider this matter with Me. The Heart is FAITH, it is trust. Where there is no emotional contraction in the midst of conditions, that is FAITH, that is absolute trust. You do not have to be sold on it by adding a belief structure. Understand. Enter into heart-Communion with Me for real, and not by self-concern, but through this response to Me. Then the Law becomes obvious. It seems trivial to say that everyone dies, but it really is the case. Love your way beyond it. Do not take it. The heart cannot accept it. Dont. You cannot know about it altogether, but you can trust it.4 This unthreatened consciousness is the spiritual disposition of love, trust, and surrender-the FAITH presumption. 5 FAITH is trust in the fundamental Nature of Existence. It is simply that feeling itself. It has no other content that believes, "If I have FAITH, my body will get well. If I have FAITH, the world will create peace. If I have FAITH, I will live forever"it is not that. It is just a fundamental emotion, the emotion of trust, unbounded feeling in the context of birth. You know how difficult it is to come across that FAITH emotion. Nevertheless, simply to trust Existence should be fundamental to our being. How many of us trust Existence? I mean altogether. That trust should be most basic to our personality, but it is not. What is most basic to us is that we do not trust Existence. We are thinking about It, worried about It, and hyperactive because we do not trust It. We are seeking physically, exploiting ourselves and so on. Because of the emotional problem, we do not trust Existence, we do not love, and we do not enjoy free energy and free motion. We do not participate in the Current of Life that pervades Nature. We do not even acknowledge that Current exists. (unpublished talk, 12/82)
The chronic disturbances of the mental being are reactive contractions, or recoil from FAITH Submission is another, word for FAITH, really. That process of surrender, that disposition of submission, is FAITH, rather than any kind of hopeful believing in some proposition about reality acquired through religion. That submission is true religion. In this time of doubt people are highly secularized, not even religious. If they are religious they are basically provincial and associated with religion in its lowest form, the form it takes in the lesser stages of life. In this epoch, people tend to live on the basis of doubt. Doubt informs our culture, it is a primary principle of our world society. One of the great traditional means to restore FAITH is to consider the testimony of those Realizers who have come before and those now communicating the Way of Realization. Why Study the Great Traditions The truly human individual is expressed via the heart, or the feeling-intelligence. That summation of Man transcends and masters the vital-physical, emotional-sexual, and mentalintentional structures "below" the heart. It provides a way for the psychic and supramental structures "above" the heart to awaken, grow, and also be transcended. The heart is the bodily epitome, and the disposition of Communion with the Divine Life-Radiance and unqualified Consciousness of the Real. FAITH is Bodily Surrender to Life That heartfelt submission is practiced in the Way of FAITH or the Way of Divine Communion in one fashion, and it is practiced in the Way of Insight in another fashion. In both cases, however, precisely the same process is involved: relinquishment of the self-contraction, immersion in the inherent Reality, which is the Spiritual Divine, which is Self-Radiant Love-Bliss. Therefore, That Which is Realized through this discipline is always Love, Bliss, inherent Radiance of Being, inherent Unity, Communion with and ultimate Identity with the Living God. This is a profound practice. It is not just some smiling, conventional religious affair in which you try to keep yourself together morally and functionally. It is a matter of Ecstasy and the accompanying Intoxication. You must practice this. You must submit yourself in my Company every moment, and that is a discipline But the force of prior Realization is so profound that it carries with it an innate FAITH that even if you enter into the lesser conditions the Realization will not ultimately be lost Resort to My Grace, rather than to yourself. Do so fully, with great FAITH, great response, great heart, great daily discipline, great discrimination, great intent. Do it for real. Prove it in life. Prove it in My experience. This is what it takes. The round of failure, fussing, and asking for forgiveness goes nowhere but to hell - and there is hell. Hell is not a location. It is a disease. It is a destiny. It is fear, egoic "self-possession", and confusion, registered experientially. It does not need a place. It is wherever you are, now and after death. The Yoga of Body, Emotion, Mind, and Breath
